Quilts for the Carlisle Festival Auction

May 13, 2017

The Carlisle Festival planners are so excited to showcase the beautiful hand-made quilts which will be available in our live auction this year.

All of these magnificent creations are the work of Marie Ireland, who has generously donated them in support of the Carlisle Festival fundraiser. Marie has created over 500 original and hand-made quilts since her retirement in 2000, and many people have been lucky enough to take home one of her treasures from the Festival auctions.

All of this year's quilts are on a theme which Marie calls "It's Hard to Go Green". Her inspiration is the desire that we share to help Mother Earth by being more environmentally conscious. But as we all know... it is hard to keep everything "green" in our busy, contemporary lives. Despite our best intentions, other colours creep in. And so it is with Marie's quilting.

All quilts are professionally machine quilted and bound around the perimeter.

Quilt 1 ~ A Wonky Log Cabin

All original design, in the Scrappy Quilt style. Green border and binding, some metallic fabrics. Green theme but other colours keep coming into the mix. There are 403 pieces (fabric scraps) in this creation.

Back: Strippy or pieced back, meaning it is made up of pieces rather than a single piece of fabric.

Size: 63" by 73" (double)

Quilt 2 ~ It's Hard Going Green

All original design, in the Scrappy Quilt style. Green border and binding, some metallic fabrics. Green theme but other colours keep coming into the mix. When sewing the quilt top, Marie attempted to "go green" and was finally successful by ending with one solid green square block. There are 485 pieces (scraps) in this creation and some of them are very tiny.

Back: Solid piece backing, meaning it is made up of a single piece of fabric. Beige and white polka dots.

Size: 60" by 73" (double)

Quilt 3 ~ Chickadees

All original design, in the Scrappy Quilt style. Red border and binding, red and green fabrics.

Back: Solid piece backing. Charming green chickadee pattern.

Size: 42" by 52" (lap quilt)

Quilt 4 ~ Not Even Green

All original design, in the Scrappy Quilt style. Rust binding, beautiful and unique hand-dyed fabric squares, emphasis on blues.
